Teembun is a playful take on the Cantonese pronunciation of 甜品, the Chinese word for dessert. My family is from Guangzhou, and teembun is my way of sharing part of that heritage.
In Cantonese food culture, sweets are enjoyed over tea, shared after meals, and sought out at neighborhood dessert shops. They range from steamed cakes and delicate pastries to silky puddings and sweet soups. Some also reflect traditional Chinese ideas about nourishment and balance, with ingredients chosen as much for their perceived nourishing qualities as for their flavor. These desserts carry traditions passed between generations and shaped by the places that make them their own.
Over time, I’ll introduce more Cantonese desserts to the menu. There’s plenty more I look forward to making.
